Live Your Destiny Perspective
By Robin Modlin
Highlights from Breathing Room Collections: Perspective
“One Day at a Time: Living with Cystic Fibrosis”, 2004
“Live Your Destiny”
A Perspective, Robin Modlin, Art Director, Caregiver Stories
The mom pictured in this photo is surrounded by her children. Which one or ones have CF? It is hard to tell. There was a refreshing chaos in trying to capture this family in this photo. Look carefully, each child’s uniqueness is reflected. Raising 8 children, three with CF has been a challenge physically and spiritually for their mom.
Kathy’s Caregiver contribution reflects the need for a loved one to find some way to understand and hold the grief and pain of anticipating losing a child to the disease. We all find our own way to do this. Kathy was courageous in sharing her perspective with us. When you look into her eyes and read her poem her heart speaks to you. It is a mother’s heart that deeply loves her children and grieves the difficulty they have living with CF. The grief is accompanied with a love and an intensity to live each moment fully. This is the great gift that can come with living with chronic life threatening diseases.
As caregivers, whether parents, grandparents, friends or medical professionals we are all forever affected by our experience of CF. It makes us confront what is important in our lives and gives honor to the hard times associated with living with a chronic disease. Our loved ones with CF become our heroes and models for living a full and rich inner life.
