The Warrior
And there he lies in a heap, only feet from his bed.

The once bright eyes, shut tight and quivering.

Breathing unsteady and laboured
he is not the warrior people picture
as they choose to leave the fight to a spent man.

They believe that those who fight can afford to:
have the resources from which to draw.

But he knows there is no choice;
the frenzy of the battle becomes a smothering death,
when one no longer raises the sword.

And so he sleeps for now.
dreaming dreams of gallant feats and joyous celebrations.
And in his dreams, he is a man of grand stature;
with a hearty laugh and a flashing sword,
and in his dreams he always sleeps on his bed.

But, in the morning there will be a real world to face
and his failing arms will raise the sword;
now more a symbol than a weapon,
and he will grit his teeth and stagger headlong into the fray.

Day in and day out he will face his foe.
But night after night he will drag himself homeward
Never to sleep in his bed again.
